4ième Grand Cru Classé
This cru with the
same name as the village, is the first chateau you will see when entering the
village of Beychevelle St. Julien. The chateau is wonderful, it used to be
called the “Versailles du Médoc”. In St. Julien, Beychevelle lived a
high-minded admiral. All ships that sailed into the Gironde must salute by dropping
the sails ‘baisser les voiles’. The name “Beychevelle” would be derived from
this. The chateau has changed owners since 2011. It is now in hands of Pierre
Castel (from the famous négociant trader in Bordeaux and elsewhere in France)
and the Japanese group Suntory (also owner of Ch. Lagrange). The wines are an
example of a perfect St. Julien; elegance, class and finesse. The optical eye
(laser) is used since 2015 for the selection of the berries. The new cuverie is
used since 2016 and allows a better parcel vinification without pumps and with
more precision.
